Day 01: Itinerary of Gondar

Gondar Gondar is founded around 1635 by Emperor Fasilidas and was the medieval capital of Ethiopia for over 200 year. The hilly surrounding made it easy to defend,· malaria was absent because of the high altitude and fresh water available from several rivers. It's founder and his successors left the town with marvelous castles en churches.

Nowadays Gondar is is a lively university town with a pleasant town centre which was build by the Italian's and still called Piazza. The town is famous for the asmari's (praise singers) playing their masinko's (one-string violin-like instrument). It makes a nice evening out to see them performing in one of the Asmari Bet's.

The small village of Wolleka, just north of Gondar, is a little remainder of the  Falasha (Ethiopian Jews) community who's origin is not known but it's believed their story is  connected to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi) Fasilidas Castle in the Royal EnclosureGraceful castles built in the 17th and 18th century by the successive Gonderine kings are found on the 70 hectare compound. In addition it contains many other structures among them a sauna (said to treat Iyasu the Great who was suffering skin disease) and a lion cage to symbolize the connection with the Lion of Judah. The Royal Enclosure or Fasil Ghebbi is a World Heritage Site.

Fasilidas Bath Fasilidas Bath in GondarNot known if it is founded for leisure or religious purposes by the royal family, nowadays it is the main site for the very colorful Timket celebrations in Gondar. It is a very  peaceful place to walk around. On the site is a monument what is believed to be the grave of Zobel the brave horse of Fasilidas.

Day02: Kuskuam Maryam

A rough road leads to Kuskuam, a few kilometers out of town. It was the residence of Empress Mentewab. Not as well preserved as the Royal Enclosure it still makes a worthwhile visit. On November 15th (16th in a leap year) the colorful Debre Kuskuam, remembering the apparition of St. Mary during her exile in Egypt, is celebrated here.

Debre Birhan Selassie Church The painted ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie Church in GondarDuring the invasion of the Mahdist of Sudan in 1888 almost all the churches of Gondar have been destroyed. It is said this church survived by the protection of a swarm of bees. Well known for the elaborated decorated inside including the world famous ceiling with the angel faces. Every 7th day of the month (Ethiopian Calendar) Selassie day (day of Trinity) is celebrated.

Day 03: GONDAR - DEBARK - SANKABER (3,250m)

7-8 km, 2-3 hours walking. In the morning at about 7:30 the bus picks us up at the hotel in Gondar and takes us 100 km north on the Ethiopian highland to Debark, a small town of about 35,000 inhabitants at the border to the famous Simien National Park. After a quick stop for the formalities at the head quarter offices of the national park and for collecting cook and scouts we drive out on a rough road to the Sankaber area at about 3,100 m sea level from where we take a short walk of 2-3 hours to assist the acclimatization process. We get a first impressive view over the dramatic mountain range and see some typical plants of that area such as big Heather Trees (erica arborea), St.John swort (hypericum revulutm) or the Abissinian Wild Rose (rosa abissinica). This is also the area in which the largest number of Gelada Baboons (theorepticus gelada) can be found. First night in the tents at the Sankaber camp at 3,250m sea level.

Day 04: SANKABER (3,250m) - GICH (3,600m)

13 km, 6-7 hours walking including breaks. At Sankaber we organize and arrange mulemen and mules which carry our heavy camping and cooking equipment for the next days. So the hikers need to carry only a light daypack with some water, the photo camera, a light jacket and a few personal things that they might need for the hike during the day. After the breakfast (bread, eggs, porridge, coffee, tea,…) we leave the camp at around 8:30 and we traverse along the Northern escarpment before dropping down to get impressive views, for example of the beautiful Jinbar Waterfall. In the large gorge of the waterfall there are many huge circling birds, especially vultures such as the Griffon Gyps fulvus), Lappet-faced or Nubian Vulture (Torgos tracheliotos) and Lammergeier or Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) and other smaller birds as buzzards and ibises. Hopefully we also encounter the endemic Abissinian Catbird (Parophasma galinieri). Among the mammals Klipspringers (oreothragus oreothragus) and Meneliks Bushbucks (Tragelaphus scriptus) can be observed between Sankaber and Gich. After a short distance (20 min) on the rough road, crossing the Jinbar river where we have the lunch break, we ascend through terraced farmland to the village of Gich and walk through to our camp at 3,600m. In the evening we have the possibility to walk up (30 min) to the mountain Kedadit (3,760m) and to assist to an unforgettable sunset. Meals included: B, L, D.

Day 05: GICH (3,600m) - CHENEK (3,620m)

15 km, 7-8 hours walking including breaks. After the breakfast we walk for about 2 hours to the summit of Imet Gogo (3,926m), which is one of the most spectacular viewpoints with 360 degrees and from where we can see Ras Dashen, the highest peak of the country. After a photo break we trek along the whole escarpment, cross a small valley and climb the peak Inatye (4,070m) where we will take our lunch stop and have a rest. From there we will have a nice view more than 1,000m down to the green fields of the mountain villages Dihwara, Tiya, Amiwalka and Truwata. During the whole day we walk through vast fields of Giant Lobelia (lobelia rhynchopetalum) and sometimes Heather Trees (erica arborea) or Red Hot Poker (knphofia foliosa). After the break we descend and reach our camp Chenek in the afternoon (3,620m).

Day 06: Gondar

Chenek, sometimes called wildlife corridor, is the best place to see the Gelada Baboons (theorepticus gelada), the Walia Ibex (capra ibex) and then back to Hiking to ras bwuait the second mountain in simien mountain 4443m. the Walia Ibex (capra ibex)   and jelada baboons for againe to see there maybe u will to see Ethiopia Wolf there afternoon back to the twon to Gondar over night the same hotel in Gondar.

Day 07: Bahir Dar –Boat Trip on Lake Tana

Lake Tana Bahir dar, a door step to the mystical Lake Tana, is described by it people as their Riviera and, with its wide streets shaded by palm trees and sweeping views across shimmering blue waters, it is hard to argue. In the morning, we will take a boat trip on Lake Tana to visit the island monasteries. Namely Azuwa Maryam and Ura Kidane mihiret; Zege peninsula’s most famous monastery known for its very beautifully painted  ‘Meqdas’ and also it holds Ethiopian religious iconography important collection of 16th – and 18th century crosses and crowns.

Blue Niles Waterfalls In the afternoon, drive out to the majestic Blue Nile falls (water that smokes) for a short hike. The excursion to the Blue Nile fall is about 35kms from Bahir Dar. The fall is one of the most spectacular in Africa. We will return to the city late in the afternoon. You have the privilege to take a calm walk in the main streets of the city witnessing the vibe and the culture.
